Insecurity is the root charge. Pride, anger, attachment and jealousy all grow from it, and each is a strategy for not feeling it. This is why resolving a surface charge without reaching the root changes the presentation of a pattern rather than the pattern – the insecurity underneath simply recruits a different charge to do the same job.
What is the insecurity charge? Insecurity is the emotional charge that arises when your energy loses direction. It sits at the Earth level of the heart’s three spheres and is associated with the element space. It comes into existence through low self-esteem, a deluded self-identity and a deluded sense of your own position – and it produces a leader who cannot hold a direction without external confirmation.
Where insecurity sits in the five charges
Three concentric spheres of energy reside in the heart. The Earth sphere is the innermost, and it governs security. Anger and attachment sit at the Solar System sphere. Pride and jealousy sit at the Universe sphere. Insecurity sits beneath all four.
It has deep roots in the acceptance of your male and female sides, and in the ongoing negotiation between heart and mind. Where a single clear choice or life direction is missing, duality – the ego – takes up residence.
The mechanism: energy without direction
As a baby you were open, with a large heart space, setting your own rules of play. Over the years you were hurt, and you began to live in a smaller heart space. Insecurity, anxiety, confusion and stress have occupied the space you now live in.
Your full potential energy has been placed inside a smaller container, which forces it to search for room elsewhere. The result is energy moving in all directions at once.
The contrast is worth holding precisely. In a magnet, the electrons flow parallel to one another in perfect alignment, from one pole to the other. That is what directed energy looks like. Insecurity is the same quantity of energy with no shared direction – every arrow pointing somewhere different.
There is an architectural version of the same idea. When the weight on top of a building is too great for the base beneath it, pressure accumulates at the core and the structure has no option but to collapse. Too much dense energy from fears, sorrow and pain, held inside a container that was never built for it, produces exactly that imbalance.
Practically, the loss of direction means the loss of connection – first to the ground, then to other people. Individuals put their own happiness first and empathic concern disappears. Giving of yourself through your know-how and experience becomes difficult.
Insecurity’s element is space, and it resides at the Earth sphere — the word “earth” naming the sphere here, not the element. The magnetic field of your earth sphere is disturbed. The alignment is gone. You energy is moving to all directions.
How insecurity shows up in leadership
Insecurity at senior level rarely looks like visible self-doubt. Leaders who look uncertain do not usually reach the top. What it looks like instead:
Decision paralysis. Not an inability to decide, but an inability to decide without one more opinion, one more data set, one more week. The decision is technically pending. It has in fact been avoided.
Requesting confirmation. The adult who was conditioned this way still asks for directions, instructions and confirmations – from parents earlier, from bosses and boards later – in order to move. The pattern is demanding on everyone, including you.
Difficulty holding the vision. This is the expensive one. Holding a direction through the period before the evidence arrives requires an internal reference point. Insecurity has outsourced that reference point, so the vision wavers exactly when the organisation most needs it steady – and the organization reads the wavering long before anyone names it.
Over-correction into certainty. Insecurity frequently presents as its opposite: aggressive decisiveness, refusal to revisit a call, excessive conviction. This is insecurity wearing pride’s clothing, and it is the most common form of it in the C-suite.
Constant energy loss. A doubt that never resolves consumes energy continuously, whether or not anything is happening.
Why it is the root of the other four
Each of the other charges is a method for not feeling this one.
- Pride inflates, so the insecurity is not visible – including to itself
- Anger pushes people to a distance where they cannot see it
- Attachment finds something outside itself to serve as the source of worth
- Jealousy relocates the problem into what other people have
Four mechanisms, one function. This is why the sequencing of inner development work matters, and why leaders who have done years of behavioural coaching often report that something keeps returning in a new costume.
The three sabotaging techniques of the mind
Before any of this can be worked with, the mind offers three exits. They are worth naming, because each sounds reasonable:
- Fundamental questions. “Why do I have strong emotions when other people do not?” The question feels like enquiry. It functions as delay
- Blaming others. Trying to make the world love you, which reflects the low self-esteem rather than resolving it
- Labelling. “I have a specific character and it cannot be changed.” The most effective exit of the three, because it closes the subject entirely
Character is not a fixed property. It is a perception held by others, based on your emotional reactions towards them – and those reactions are the result of charges stored inside, triggered by other people.
Where insecurity forms
The fears residing in the innermost heart sphere are in most cases the result of traumas from early childhood. What happens in the first seven years is substantially determining: short traumatic experiences, prolonged conditioning by one or both parents who were themselves out of balance, or non-logical decisions a child made in order to cope with a situation.
Further back are the six pregnancy phases – conception, embryo, fully formed baby, birth, acceptance after birth, and adjustment to reality. Behind those, the actions of seven generations before you shape the unfolding of your own life. This is sometimes called the karmic wind, and it can blow favorably for years before changing around your fortieth.
Parents and siblings can collapse these energy fields in childhood. A single trauma is enough. Insecurity then rules the life of the child and, later, of the adult.
Identify where your charge was formed
→ Inner Charges Scan Assessment – the primary diagnostic for this charge, because it locates formation rather than expression. It walks the six life phases and identifies the soul layer carrying the heaviest stored fear. That layer is where the work has the greatest leverage.
→ Emotion Projection Assessment – shows which surface charges your insecurity is currently recruiting, and how each is manifesting in your leadership today.
Together they take under an hour and produce a precise map of where your constraint actually sits.
Practices for stepping into the space you need
Affirmations
- The highest frequencies of light — joy, peace, love, trust, truth, satisfaction, equanimity, faith and oneness — flow within me
- The lowest frequencies – anger, jealousy, pride, attachment, insecurity – flow through me without my identifying with them. I only observe them
- The amount of grace in my life so far is immense, and it will continue to grow
The expansion visualisation
A short practice for restoring the sense of occupied space:
- See yourself sitting in front of you
- See a body twice as large sitting in front of you
- See a body three times as large sitting in front of you
- Walk into the large body you have created, then stand and move with it
- Turn around and feel this larger body
- Look out through its eyes
- Direct your pineal gland to sustain the experience through the day
Facing your strongest duality
Move from duality – attention in the head – to unity, with intention in the heart. Stop comparing the two options you think about constantly. Instead, write down the similarities between them, and keep adding to that list over a week of contemplation.
The list pacifies the polarity. In the end you notice the two options were never as different as they appeared. The mind has a strong tendency to inflate a situation beyond its actual proportions and then polarise it. Once the polarity relaxes you move into the heart, and a decision becomes available from a position of relative peace.
For a CEO facing a genuinely difficult strategic fork, this is one of the most practical exercises in the entire framework.
Stabilising your own space
Insecurity is overcome partly by consciously remaining in your own space, and by recognising that other people’s reactions are their issue rather than yours. Each charge invades differently:
- Angry people push you away. To them, you are not useful
- Prideful people make their space large and reject yours. To them, you are inferior
- Attached people step into your space and force a union. To them, you are useful for a purpose
- Jealous people make their space small and want to do the same to yours. To them, you need to be controlled
If you continue to let these people drain your essence, the useful question is what that says about you. They trigger your own charge, and you begin identifying with the situation through it. The outer world is a reflection of the inner charged world.
Why you stay slightly smaller than you are
The conventional account of leadership insecurity is that you doubt your own competence. For most senior people that is simply not what is happening. They have the evidence. The doubt persists anyway, which means the evidence was never the issue.
This framework locates it somewhere else. Insecurity is the fear of standing at your full height with a straight back — and the reason for that fear has nothing to do with capability. When you do stand there, you feel everything. The sorrow of the people around you, and past them the sorrow of animals, plants, and the ground itself. Full presence is not selective; you cannot occupy your whole space and filter what arrives in it. So you stay a little in the background, where the collective weight cannot quite reach you, and you call it modesty, or pragmatism, or not wanting to dominate the room.
For a leader the cost is specific. Standing at full height is exactly what the role demands at the moments that decide things — the announcement, the board meeting that goes badly, the point at which an organisation needs to see someone occupying the position rather than administering it. A leader who has learned to hold back a fraction will hold back most reliably at those moments, because that is when the exposure is greatest. The pattern is not random. It is precisely inverse to when it matters.
This is also why the most sensitive people in an organisation frequently look like the least ambitious. The capacity to feel a room is real, and left unmanaged it is a standing reason to stay out of rooms.
Two things are needed, and they work together. Stand in the light with your talents rather than just beside them. And protect your inner source from dominant people and institutions — the chair who fills every available space, the investor whose certainty leaves no room for yours, the culture that quietly rewards compliance. External compression is what produced the small container to begin with, and it will keep reproducing it for as long as nothing changes.
Blocked here, you have no energy left to hold great compassion. That is the cruel shape of this charge: the sensitivity that made standing up feel unbearable is the same capacity compassion runs on. Resolve it and you do not become less sensitive. You become able to afford it.

The deeper work
The Close Up Energy Leaks program works the root directly, through Trace – Face – Embrace – Grace. Inside the unresolved charge, fear and sorrow sit as contracted energy from early life. The process addresses it at the layer where it formed and releases the contraction rather than managing its expression.
The Power Up Soft Skills program then develops what becomes structurally available once the root is resolved – most directly Vision Clarity and Purpose Alignment, and Resilience.
The outcome is a leader who can hold a direction through the period before the evidence arrives. Not through discipline, but through no longer needing the evidence in order to stand.
Frequently asked questions about the insecurity charge
I do not feel insecure. Can I still be carrying this charge? Very likely, yes. At senior level insecurity usually presents as its opposite — decisiveness that cannot be revisited, or certainty that does not survive contact with new information. The charge is doing its job well precisely when it is invisible.
Which of the five should I work on first? Almost always the root, even though the surface charge is what created the presenting problem. Working the surface alone tends to produce a change of costume rather than a change of pattern.
Is this the same as imposter syndrome? There is overlap in the felt experience, but the framework locates the cause differently — not as a cognitive distortion to be corrected, but as contracted energy stored at a specific soul layer, formed at an identifiable point in early life.
Why does the framework go back to pregnancy and previous generations? Because that is where the charge is stored, and therefore where the work has to reach. The map is not decorative – it determines where the leverage is.
What resolves insecurity? Restored direction, and a container large enough for the energy it holds. Practically that means the practices above alongside the depth work that releases what is compressing the base in the first place.

What is the insecurity charge in leadership?
The insecurity charge is the root of the five inner charges in soul-based leadership development. It arises when energy loses direction and too much is compressed into too small a container. In leadership it produces decision paralysis, dependence on external confirmation, difficulty holding a vision before the evidence arrives, and frequently over-correction into rigid certainty. Pride, anger, attachment and jealousy are each strategies for not feeling it.
